The Value of Persecution

fiery hole
Dear friends,

Every life has its troubles. Painful toil, disobedient children, health problems, or the sinful actions of other humans can bring hardship into our lives. But sometimes it is granted to us to suffer because of Christ. When that happens, rejoice!

People have at times sought out suffering for Christ. I am not suggesting you should do that. No, be like Paul, who was let down in a basket to evade his pursuers. When the Jews began to persecute the church in Jerusalem, our people scattered throughout the country rather than be taken to prison. There is no sense in suffering unnecessarily.

But when the day comes where it cannot be avoided, rejoice that you have been counted worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Christ. And take heart because these things purify and prove your faith, which is more precious than gold which will perish even though refined by fire.a

The idea of suffering is frightening. The reality is quite unpleasant. It is not something to enjoy, but it is something to rejoice through because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. The faith that has endured through suffering will certainly not fail later. And it will result in a warm welcome by Jesus. Who does not want to hear “well done, my good and faithful servant”?

When you suffer, endure it with patience. We have been called to imitate Christ, and we know how he suffered for us. Suffer like Christ. He committed no sin; no deceit was found in his mouth. When insulted, he didn’t insult in return. When he suffered, he did not threaten. He trusted God who judges justly. He bore our sins on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.b “By his wounds we are healed” (Is 53:5).

Because of Christ’s humility and obedience, God has exalted and vindicated him. We, too, if we humble ourselves in this way, will be exalted.

So do not fear to lose perishable things. We exchange them for the imperishable. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.c

Also, don’t fear people. Again, remember the gospel! We have a hope and an inheritance that no human can take away from us. Even if you should suffer to the point of death, the worst they can do is kill us, and then we have our reward. Death will be no more permanent for us than it was for our Lord.

So be brave. Enduring suffering with patience because of the hope you have in Christ Jesus. Let this refine you. And honor him in all you do.

Love in Christ,
Your brother in Babylon
